Problem of the Day
If you had a banana, apple, orange, and a pear. You have to have two fruits. What combinations could you use?
You can use a tree diagram or an organized list to solve the problem.

You can have 6 combinations with the fruit.

Lesson 2-1
Mental Math (adding)
math calculations that you do in your head
You can add numbers in any order-
Commutative Propety of Addition
ex. 5+7 or 7+5
You can change the grouping of numbers when you add-
Associative Propety of Addition
ex. (3+2)+8 = 3+(2+8)
5+8+13 or 3+10=13
The sum is the answer in addition.
7+5=12
Addends (ex. 7 & 5)
Sum (ex. 12)

1) Breaking Apart
ex. $145+$39
/\
5+ 34
145+5=150
+34=184

2)Compensation (making up for)
$145+$39
145+40=185-1=184

ex.78+44 Breaking Apart or Compensation?
Compensation
78+40=118+4=122
Breaking Apart
78+44
/\

70+44=114+8=122

9) 1,000+7,000=8,000 8,000-7,000=1,000
10) (52+8)+25=85
11) $1.65 change 98 into 100, 100+67=167-2=165
12) $1.27 change 82 into 80+45=125+2=127 or
13) B $4.00 $2.53+$3.47=$6.00 $10-$6=$4.
14) You would break apart the 303 into 302. Then you would add 678 to it. 678+302=980+1=981.

PS 2-1
1) 72 into 71 71+39=110+1=$111
2) $18+72=$90
3) 9 into 8+1 39+1=40+8=48
4) No, Mr. Iverson can't bye the basketball and net because it equals $27.
5) She would have to pay $528.
6) She would have to pay $268.
7)The most expensive Andrea can buy with her horse is the saddle and the boots.
8) I solved number five by using compensation metal math. This is what I did:
I broke apart 149 into 130 130+379=509+19=528.

Tueday 26/10
Test taking practice

1)To make it easier to add, you would do this like this; (74+6)+5=85.
2) It would be C . I broke apart 73 into 70 70+85=155+3=158.

Estimating Sums and Diffrenence
answer in + answer in -
Estimate when you do not need an exact answer.
When you see the word about you don't need to know the exact answer when you add or subtract.
2 ways to estimate
(1) Using rounding (better way)
ex. 1,248 1,200 to round to the addens
+2,579 2,600 the add
3,800
( 2) Front-end estimation (Mrs.Shami does not like it, so don't use it unless says so)
1,248 1,000 1,248+2,579=3,827 (real answer)
2,579 2,000
3,000

Overestimate and Underestimate
When an estimate is greater than the actual number, it is called an overestimate.
When an estimate that is less than the exact number answer, it's called an underestimate.

ex. 825+346=1,171 800+300=1,000 est. underestimate
ex. 4,825+2,517= 7,342 5,000+3,000=8,000 est. overestimate
ex. 372+238=610 400+200=600 est underestimate
ex. 575-138=437 600-100=500

2) Write the addeds under each other, lining up the place values
3) Add the ones, regroup if necessary
4) Add the tens, regroup if necessary
5) Add the hundreds, regroup if necessary
6) Compare to actual to see if it makes sense

Solving Addition and Subtraction Equation
equation- a number sentence that uses an equal sign to show that 2 expressions have the same value.
ex.8+9=17 ex. 100- 40= 60 ex. x+3=7 ex, 7+3=4+6 ex. 7+3+2=5+5+2
solution- to equation is the value of the variable that makes the equation true.
ex.x +3= 7 equation ex. x =4 solution

Meanigs of Multiplication
The numbers you multiply to get a product are called factors.
The answer in multiplication is called the product.
Multiplication is a short cut for addition.
6+6+6+6=24
When objects are arranged in equal rows, they are called arrays.

12/3/10
Arrays are the easier way to learn Multiplication.
Patterns in Multiplication
Every time you skip count by two you end up with an even numbers.
Every time you skip count by five you go odd, even, odd, even, and so on with the numbers.
Multiple - the product of any 2 whole numbers
Is 8 a multiple of 2?
Yes because there even number
4 x 2 = 8
Multiplication Properties
Zero Property- the product of any number and zero equals zero
